Programme Coordinator Asthildur Jonsdottir, InSEA Secretary Patsey Bodkin and Head of Education at the National Botanic Gardens Felicity Gaffney invited me to participate in the Biodiversity Project of ABCDE in Vilnius, Lithuania. The ABCDE project integrates experiential learning, participatory pedagogy and artistic actions in Botanical Gardens (Iceland, Ireland and Lithuania) to create innovative educational material for primary schools. I worked alongside scientist Kate Flood explore various methods of habitat mapping, on both a micro and macro scale. We created habitat maps by implementing traditional grids, paper microscopes, drawing, collage, phenomenological experiences and collective mapping processes. Informed by the UN SDGs, our workshops sought to surpass the idea of ‘teaching teachers’ as we wanted to combine creativity, in depth analysis, and experiential placemaking as a means for fostering connection, engagement, and conversation about the natural world.
